Ushering in a new era for Mizoram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang broad-gauge railway line — the state’s first-ever rail connection — and flagged off trains linking Aizawl with Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati.
The Prime Minister, on a two-day visit to three Northeastern states, arrived at Lengpui Airport around 9 am. Due to inclement weather, he was unable to travel to the inauguration site and instead launched the railway service virtually from the airport.

From Aizawl, the Prime Minister will proceed to Manipur, marking his first visit since the ethnic unrest of 2023. His itinerary includes public addresses at Kangla Fort in Imphal and Peace Ground in Churachandpur, where nearly 10,000 people are expected to attend, including all 59 MLAs across party lines.
Local bodies consider his visit as a “glimmer of hope” amid ongoing demands for separate administration. Security measures have been significantly heightened, with bans on drones and air guns in sensitive areas. PM Modi is scheduled to inaugurate a new police headquarters, a state secretariat, and other projects valued at nearly Rs 8,500 crore.
On September 13, the Prime Minister will reach Guwahati to participate in the birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika. The following day, he will visit Mangaldai in Darrang district to unveil projects worth Rs 18,000 crore.
These include the Rs 5,700 crore Guwahati Ring Road, a Rs 4,200 crore bamboo-based bio-ethanol plant at the Numaligarh Refinery, and a new medical college.
